Do any local stores truly quarantine fish?

I know my local store does that I buy my fish from. They copper(cupramine) and honestly, before I found them, I had the most spotty time with animals. The worst I have gotten it off all the fish I purchased from them was one fish beating and intimidating the other (a mean tomini Tang that was the smallest and last thing on the tank, but beat even on my Tusk and Niger). But even after they got sick of him, he called down.

But I haven't lost a fish from them collectively in two plus years. I know what they feed their animals, their a good supplier, and honestly, they work with you on trying to get anything you want from beginner to expert. I love those guys(gals).. Very, very rare place!

dylan at the pet shop will qt fish for me sometimes, tell him kyle sent ya and see what he will do. very understanding and awesome guy and has qtd fish for me as of recent. but yea if you have the room for a little 10-20g tank, its extremely easy to set up within minutes on a shelf or corner out of the way. im actually doin it now with a puffer who has lockjaw. good luck :)

It is not economical for a LFS to do a full quarentine on every fish so you shouldn't depend on a LFS to do it. Some probably do methods to subdue or prevent diseases when acclimating into their stores. Things like hypo salinity, run mixtures or ratios of copper, anti fungal meds or even cyanide. Yep, some catchers/divers use cyanide to catch fish and I've heard some LFS use trace amounts of cyanide in order to keep difficult tangs alive like an Achilles tang. So the point I'm trying to make is don't expect a LFS to quarantine, you will have to make a judgment call and decide if the fish is healthy enough and always ask to see the fish eating. Good luck.

As a breeder we have pretty strict quarantine procedures and I have a 3 stage quarantine system set up. Once I get all of the clowns I purchased this weekend through quarantine I am thinking about offering QT Services to those who need it.

I might also try purchasing fish and quarantine them for 8 weeks before selling them.

Would there be any interest in this? What would be a fair price for the 8 week QT service? Would you be willing to pay a little more for a fish that has been quarantined properly (to cover our costs of the two month quarantine)?

We could also custom order fish for you, qt and let you know when they are ready.

For me there wouldn't be. Mostly because I feel comfortable doing it myself but also because I would require a live delivery guarantee from any QT business. If I give a business my fish to QT I expect it back alive or to be replaced if it dies in QT. This (of course) makes it difficult on the business, I understand that, but for me without this I might as well do it myself.

Since the QT fish would be ones ordered through that store I dont think a live gaurantee is too much to ask for the more common fish, those that are known to be hard to train to eat prepared foods or just hard to keep in general would have to be considered special cases. If I order a blenny and am willing to pay more to have them hold it and QT it for me first then yes I expect the fish to be alive at the end of QT when I pick it up.

I dont think it would be wise to open the QT program to people bringing in fish in from outside that store, again too many variables that could cause a loss in revenue for the store.

Yea after considering it, I think qt for outside purchases would be a bad idea. Would be able to offer alive guarantee on fish purchased through me though.

I'd be interested in this. I know LE corals will quarantine fish you buy through them and it ups the price by $5-$10, which I find acceptable.
