Clams get their food from light, that is why such strong light is needed in a clam tank. If you want to feed them, do it in the day when they are extended.
i imagine they are still filter feeding at night. my clams don't close up all the way at night and the excurrent siphon is still sticking out of the shell.
hmmm, maybe they feed more because of the lack of light?

they slowly filter the water all the time. they use there gills to breath and to eat, so what ever particles are in the water that passe's over there gills is filtered out. if they want/need to eat at that time and whatever they caught appeals to them then they will eat it. day or night doesn't really matter
