Do I need an m80 ballast?

I have a old magnetic ballast that i used to run SE 250 mh's on. Im pretty sure that its an m58. recently i switched over to a DE 250w and im still using it. its takes a few tries for it to start and it usualy trips my smoke detectors but eventually comes on and the lights up my 14k phoenix bulb very nice. But im assuming the surging on start-up is because my current ballast(m58) is probe start and not pulse start. If i switched ballasts would i notice a smoother start-up and maybe even a different color from the the bulb?

you aren't supposed to run 250W DE's on standard m58's...get a e-ballast or m80

i hope someone will chime in with what will eventually happen, but i'm guesiing something not very good!
