Do i need to cook? and how?

I have quite a bit of live rock that I would like to add to my sump. I will use a peice or two of liverock from the display to create some life in it but I dont know if i need to cook it. It has been outside in fresh water for about a year. Im worried about freshwater algae and whatever else that grows in fresh water leeching phosphate and nitrogen into my system. What should I do with it? cook it? soak it in RODI? and if i cook it, how?

Why not soak it in saltwater for a few days and see what happens.

I could soak it in either RODI salt water, RODI fresh water or old waterchange water if i were to soak it for a week or so. If phosphates and nitrates test zero then would the rock be considered safe?
