Do I really need Phyto Feast?

I have mostly Zoos, 1 claim, few other soft coral, and a LTA.

Would any of these guys benefit from dosing Phyto Feast?

There was a pretty nice TOTM that was over-grown with ricordia and zoanthids and the owner was big into feeding Phyto. Supposedly, the clams will dig the phyto as well.

thats interesting... I have mostly zoas and rics too... and I regularly feed phyto. Any shots of your tank Mnestroy?

I wouldn't say that that TOTM winner's success was all b/c of Phyto, but it didn't appear to be hurtin' anything :)

Does Phyto Feast have live phytoplankton in it? I'd go with DT's myself. Lots of other goodies packed in there too. If you have a sandbed at all, the critters in there need that food to live.

Phytofeast encourages/feeds: clams, dusters, sponges, any filterfeeding creatures, and some corals seem to respond to it. I've used both DT's and Phytofeast with good success: the sponge growth in my previous tank setup was epic.

"I put 2 liters of it in every other day"

Are you using a concentrated Phyto like DT's or PhytoFeast? (I imagine that you aren't b/c of the amount that you listed....)

I think PF is more concentrated than DT's but it's not live. It also has some kind of molasses as a preservitave. Rod knows a lot about this.

They have two versions of Phytofeast one live and one dead. I would not use the dead one. But DT's has a better formula IMO.

I used to use photo feast and the DTs, I stopped about 5months ago and haven't noticed any difference...

I feeds Rods feed... I guess i'm just wondering if this stuff is more of a 'snake oil'

There is no phytoplankton in Rod's Food. He recommends adding DT's with his food, for a healthy tank. Again--the pods in your tank/sand need this to live.

No phyto, but he does have DT's oyster eggs according to premium aquatics:

INGREDIENTS: Shrimp, scallop, oyster, clam, Squid, octopus, enriched brine, krill, mysis, grouper, Red Plankton, broccoli, carrots, colliflower, Red Nori, green nori, selco, garlic, Golden pearlsTM (all sizes) DTs oyster eggsTM, nutra rose powder, fresh rotifers, fresh baby brine.

Not the same though. Oyster eggs will not feed your sandbed.

Yep, just corals...I do Oyster eggs occassionally now and am thinking of doing the whole DT system, but am trying to get a cyano outbreak under control first. No need to go adding more nutrients til that is under control...

That is absolutly wrong.

Actually I side Puffer on this one(sort of). The PF live at the store is not as good compared to DT's. Yet if you call the company directly for the same price you get a more concentrated solution thus including more ingredients then DT's. It will be sent out to you right away keeping many things alive.

The PF company just does not offer that solution at stores because people would normally dump a whole bottle and wonder why the tank was green:confused: ... a less concentrated solution was offered at the stores and the more concentrated has to be ordered directly.

I had heard this from another reefer. I was skittish about the idea, but nope called and asked for a more concentrated solution and the price was exactly the same.

thanks gresham, some odd info here

i've never dosed phyto and i've always had plenty of pods, even in BB tanks :eek2: not to say phyto isnt good, but odds are you wont notice the difference directly. if i were to ever dose phyto i'd use a grotech reactor for continual dosing and ease...well and because it's a cool toy jmo.
