The guys at my LFS said that these clams feed on nitrate, is this true and at what level? Would it be good to use on to reduce nitrates? Thanks!

i have 9 clams in my 120 gal

I have 25 in my 120g:smokin: lol

Clams feed on nitrates and ammonia but it takes quite a few to make a difference.

Do the spiny oysters feed off nitrates and ammonia as well?

no

Tridacna clams consume nitrogen because of the photosynthetic zoox that lives inside of them. it really this algae that using it.

i see i need to catch up...i only have 10 clams in my 70, but i'll be adding a clam "filter tank" soon. i don't know how much they will actually filter, but it's a great excuse for setting up a tank just for clams! my LPS has a 14" gigas and it's so tempting setting up a tank just for it.
