Do not buy Hydor Koralia Evolutions

Like most aquarium problems this is another one of those problems that no matter how much you try to automate your reef tank by use of controllers, they will still happen when you leave town for a few day's. This time it happened to my 3 Koralia Evolutions. I have had these for about 4-5 months at the most, and when I came home they were all not working. I figured my aquarium care taker just fed the fish and they were still on standby through my reefkeeper controller. But sadly that wasn't the case. So I pulled them all out and switched them back out for my modded maxi jet. The funny part is, is that all 3 of them were broken at the same time and now they will only start up with the help of a finger. And even then they only spin half as fast as they did before. If it was just one, I would consider it just a mishap but since all three gave out at the same time, it just means that they are built like complete trash. You can see a video that I posted on youtube here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v6aZ1so0ek. If anyone has any idea of why these did that, please chime in.

You will find many including myself that love these powerheads.....do you clean them? Possible calcium buildup?

That's the thing there is none. The first one that I fired up by using my finger was the newest one that I just added 4 day's ago.

I have 2 Evelution 1050s. Thry run for about a month and then stop. They also do not like to restart if I stop them - have to mess with them to got them going again. Also they are very slow about customer service. Too bad because when they work they work great. I am leaving for a 5 day vacation and one of the things I have to do before I can leave town for a couple days is clean them.:bounce3:

Could they have been fried/shocked? Maybe there was a jolt while you were gone...

I've been using Koralias for years...and never had an issue.

Try contacting the Hydor directly!

My understanding is there is some issue with a bushing inside the PH that causes it to either freeze or start in reverse. I know several that have contacted Hydor and had them replaced.

The issues seems to be on older Evolution models (ie. when they first came out) and was fixed about six months or so ago.

Prior to having the bushings replaced, mine would often run backwards upon startup. Now, while I wouldn't trust them on a wavemaker, they work fine after a year of use.

I have my koralias hooked up on a gfc or whatever you call them outlets so I think it would trip the breaker if something jolted them. Or I would think other stuff would fry as well such as my metal halide ballasts. I just hope that I can get a refund or something because I can't have this happen again and I will probably just buy some of those controllable tunze's.

I am just glad that I keep my old aquarium stuff and I just happen to have some modded maxi jets laying around because I would be a lot more ****ed if the only flow I would have is my return pump until who knows how long it will take them to send bushings. I also went to hydorkoralia.com and the website looks very cheap. I haven't read the one thread posted on here yet but does anyone know of an email address to write them?

There contact info is on their site. There should even be an area with info on the bushings. They realizes there was issue and have since corrected the problem with newer evolutions. They send you brand new bushings free of charge. I know someone who had three sets sent to him a month ago

I love my Korilia pumps. I have used 2 K2 for a few years with no issues. I have now retired one as a backup and in its place is a Evolution 1050. Great improvement on an already great power head. I think you should try to clean them. I clean mine every few months.

I've noticed issues with mine too. I replaced the bushings and they eventaully began starting in reverse again. That eventually turned into sometimes not starting at all, so off the controller they went. After owning them for about 8 months, the shaft on one locked up inside the little cavity it slides into and broke off. The other is running, but not as well as it did in the past. I clean both of them as required. Oddly enough, my 3 year old Koralia 1 and twos are still running strong. I haven't had a single issue until I made the boneheaad mistake of breaking the plastic magnet attachment shaft off in one. It still works fine other than that though. I'll probably be looking elsewhere for new powerheads in the future. It should be noted that I haven't called Koralia to see if they'll do anything about it. I have always heard that they have great customer service and are quick to rectify problems.

I did try to clean them and as of now they are somewhat working. I wrote hydor to send me new bushings because I don't know how much time I have until they go out again. That is truly frustrating because like I mentioned one of those powerheads have been in there for only 4 day's and it seized up. I mean what company sends out such crap? And those things are not cheap at all! I was very impressed with them at first because of how quiet they are and how little electricity they consume but now I am not so sure. So I hope when they send me new bushings they will work properly and I will be happy again.

A few friends of mine ended up with some priority mail packages from Hydor to replace the bushings a few (3-4) days after they called.

I have the new 1400s and they have been working great for 3 months so far. I clean them regularly though with vinegar.

I have seen a lot of threads about cleaning these regularly and man that sucks because i'm not one for extra cleanings of my reef tank. I've had maxi jets in my tank before that would run one year between cleanings and could have probably ran 2 years, but of course at the cost of 20 watts instead of like the 3 or 6 of the hydors
