do plates split?

i have an orange plate and it seems to be growing a new mouth?
At first i thought i hurt the flesh with my tank swap then i noticed the little white mouth eating.
dose this mean hes splitting?

i've never heard of a plate splitting. when a plate dies, it regenerates babies from it's skeleton, that's how it reproduces. just b/c ive never heard of it splitting, doesn't mean it's not true, i've just never seen/heard one splitting
