Do we really need this much light

reading all the threads on would think as I have that we as a hobby can never match the needs as far as light is concerned for corals in a captive reef! But contrary to this I have seen many tanks including my brother in laws with what most on this forum would consider unacceptable lighting PARs', intensity, etc etc.... and they not only do well but thrive. The example I am most familiar with and will try to get pics from my brother in law in VA is a 110G high with only bloody PC lighting going on regular ballast hmmm and he has a problem with his corals growing too much. bubble coral, cabbage, etc.. yes softies but... even had a calm at the bottom that grows , yes slow but it grows.... his whole set up is low tech to say the least.... makes u want to say hmmmmmmmmmmm
