Do you blow off your Rocks with a Turkey Baster?

I think Im going for the "Every Other Day" routine myself. iI have WAY TOO MUCH crap coming off my rocks. I only see it if I blow them out though. Im runnin' socks, so I should be able to export a lot of it, hopefully.

I have a spare Mag 9.5. I was thinking of attaching the gaurd on the intake, a hose on the output and lowering it into my tank to blow stuff off.

I use the tinyiest tube I can find and stick it in the holes and syphon the stuff out when I do a waterchange. I only have to do it to 2 big rocks, the others I cooked before setting up the new tank and they dont seem to shed at all.

I have to say, i thought i was the only one with the turkey baster idea :)

Weekly, at every water change, i use the baster to clean off rocks and get into the corners.....i also use a 10 micron sock for two days after that and the water is so clear it looks as though its not in the tank!

It seems to help or at least i think it does...

Cheers

Last Thanksgiving, we discovered that we didn't have a turkey baster for turkey, but I have 3 for the reef tanks.

:)

The avatar says it all. :)

Well...I never clean mine either...except for when I first moved everything to the new tank...but this sounds like a good idea

You mean my wife cannot use the one I use for my reef??? She didn't buy that line either. I got chewed out for using the only one we have in the house. Hey its only Thanksgiving.

I usually let the 'girl' lr do it. It's alot less mess, and I don't get water in my nose. But, I must say, you are pretty dedicated to go through all that trouble.......

lol. I can't believe I beat everyone to the pun on this one.......

fwiw, I also use the baster to 'clean' my rocks. Uh, fish tank rocks. The rocks in my fish tank. Oh, forget it.......

I'll tell you what...

I Basted my rocks 2 days in a row. Wow... my tank is so clear today and everything looks SO good!
Im going to keep up with it. The best part? I only have one small amount of mineral detritus on the bottom.... everything else got exported or ended up back in the rock, lol.

I know it could use it again but I dont want to ruin the clean look! MAybe after I stare at it for awhile!

I change filter socks every 3-4 days. Every 2-3 changes I'll blow off the rocks with a MJ1200, wait for the dust to settle, then change the filter sock. I also feed the fish every 2-3 days at the same time (a few hours before filter change).

Sindjin, I noticed the same thing today. I blew off my rocks and it was a mess!! After about 5 rounds of blowing/siphoning/and a sock change, my water looked much clearer.

Although I wonder, is it clearer, or is it just that it looks clearer cause it was just sooo dirty??? Either way, I know I am getting a lot of junk out of the water.

I used to do it ever day or two, but it never seemed to get better. Every time there was just as much crap. After months of that I've slowed down to about twice a week. When I get Tunzes I will try the every day thing again... I'm thinking my current flow just isnt getting it to the overflow.

I used to have 2x6200's and 2x6100's in my tank - and when I used a turkey baster I still had lots of stuff come out. I think it's good to find every crevice every once in a while and blow out the gunk. Whenever I do it, my SPS open wide for food!

Well... I just did it AGAIN tonight. Still a good amount of stuff, but a lot less. Im going to do it every other nite for awhile... I think every nite may be too stressfull on some of the corals. Opinions?

In addition, I bought a big bag of Poly-Fil to put in my DIY media box I made out of eggcrate...it hangs between my first two bubble traps. Its a lot cheaper than the blue padding. I wanted something I dont mind changing and throwing away every few days. So far it catches some debris but not a lot.
