If you're buying commercial calcium and carbonate (alkalinity) solutions to keep your Ca and Alk levels elevated, you're paying big bucks, needlessly... Common baking soda is easy to come buy and is a simple and inexpensive way to keep your alkalinity levels high, but cheap sources of calcium aren't always easy to find.
I recently bought 50 pounds of Dowflakes which is a very acceptable source for dosing your system with calcium. Of course 50 pounds of the stuff will last my tanks until long after I'm gone from this world! So I have divided the stuff up into gallon quantities (individual bags of 2.5 cups). Just mix the 2.5 cups of Dowflakes with 1 gallon of DI or RO water and you're good to go!
If you want some, I'll bring several bags to the meeting, priced at $1 per bag. Just let me know.
