do you have a probem with your LFS?

I'm not entirely sure you understand the dynamics of curing DIY LR. If I had made that rock and dropped it directly in a tank of SW, the pH on day 1 would be close to 14...

oh, I have no doubt that I do understand the dynamics of curing after making (literally) a ton of rock. yes, I know the pH would be high, curing in saltwater with minimal WC's takes quite a while, that was my point. It needs to be cured in FW and changed weekly until the pH drops to acceptable levels.

My rock was cured and pH neutral months before I used it....

you failed to mention this in your post. so it's all good.

IMO It really amazes me of all the bashing of LFS when in fact I believe most of us visit them (atleast most I know) and have started the hobby with them knowledge or not then we make our decisions. In the end I believe most of us still need something in a hurry now and then and rush to the LFS. IMO if knowledge is the issue we all have the opportunity to help if we want to keep the store around. If they are price gouging then maybe we should not support them. I myself still enjoy LFS, find them interesting and enjoy meeting other reefers there as well. If things keep going the way they are with online we will not have any LFS then when our heaters , pumps or something else breaks and we cannot go to the LFS in a hurry our reefs will die before we can get one ordered and shipped. So IMO we should be somewhat supportive to our LFS for us, our tanks and all the newbies of the future. Excuse my spelling and rambling I just had to say my 2 cents.

no offence, but the second store employee by the sounds of it knows what they are talking about, you need to do more reading on how to set up a salt water aquarium, stabalizing a tank with live rock at minimum 1 lb per gallon of good quality and porous rock eg totoka, bali, not man made rock which will probably give you ph problem, for minimum 6 weeks before adding ANY livestock fish coral or cuc.

so you should sit back a re evalute the situation with the second store employee after you yourself have understood what you re doing and thank him for helping you.

the lfs i have here which is big als sucks....unfortunately i have to drive minimum 1 hour to go to a good lfs...

Either you're speaking from no personal experience with manmade LR, or you didn't do it correctly when you used it. Go to www.garf.org if you have trouble believing that manmade LR won't cause pH problems.

Also, watch out for those "hard" rules like "you need a minimum of 1 pound per gallon." There is zero truth to them, although most people accept the general rule that more rock helps to sustain a larger bioload. If you want to see an example of a phenomenal SPS tank with virtually no rock or sand though, search on here for the thread "Leonardo's Formosa Forest."

man i truly did not intend to cause such chaos, i just was wondering if people gave advice to the LFS like i do, when they are not sure what they are talking about. everyone has varying opinions and no one way is the correct way to do it, that is why we have places like RC where we can all get together. i just was angry that the mom and pop LFS i have been going to lately started SW tanks with no experience. i am truly appologetic if i have caused any distress within the RC community, but i thought that it was something that needed to be addressed. thank you all for your input.
