over the calf or ankle height ?

I try to wear tall socks at all times. Because I usually wear knee-high boots to work. Tall socks just feel nicer inside boots than short socks do.

As for filter socks... I don't use them. I don't have a problem with particulates in my tank. If I was going to use them, I'd clean them at least once a week.

I have some but I never used them. Maybe someday. As for my feet, Construction worker, you do the math.:eek1:

Daily. My sump will only fit 4" x 8" socks. I use the 200 micron "felt" type - <$5 typically. Polishes the water nicely but supposedly collects (and kills) Copepods. I have 10 or so and just pop them into a 5 gal bucket of bleach water to hold until I get a bunch - then into the washer w/ more bleach to clean them. Fairly easy maintence item...

I ran my last sump without a sock and a lot of detritus collected in the corners, between baffles, etc. I'm running my new sump with a sock and not much particulate matter appears to be accumulating in those nooks and crannies.

Most of the threads I have read suggest cleaning the sock every 3-4 days at minimum. After a couple of weeks of light feeding, my sock isn't anywhere near capacity (some hobbyists reported that their socks overflowed when full!) From a maintenance perspective, I'd prefer to leave it for a while, but I wonder if it wouldn't be smarter to yank it more regularly. Even though it's not full, the material that has collected can only be decomposing, I suspect.
