If I DO NOT count the original investment and expenses including 5 years of paying California utility bills then yes, as of the first of this year the system brings in more than it costs to run. As a hobbyist I don't count the start up cost because I did it for fun, it was a hobby and I would have been happy to do it even if it never made money. I figure I have +/- $20k into it now so it would take a long time to recover that. As a "business venture" it would be a bust. OTOH it's all paid for so at this point yes breeding clowns is "profitable"
I just started about a year ago. I expect to break even possibly this summer. I just did my taxes, so I have toted up my expenses recently-- almost 1500$, and I did it on the cheap with donated tanks and sump.
I should qualify my remarks above, that time and investment was put into marine species other than ocellaris clowns. I only started with the clowns about a year ago so yes it can get profitable quickly I guess. I have to think the experience with other species has something to do with it though.
I never intend to make a win, I have 20 fish tanks and only my electricty bill is about 350 $ / months .... but when these cute little baby premnas look at me I am hooked
