Do you name your fish or even the other creatures in your tank? Why or why not? If you do, what do you base your names on? Do you keep to a theme when you name tank inhabitants? Share Share share! :spin1:
Yes I name them. Actually my girlfriend does. She likes to give them silly names and my only rule is they have to make it a month before they get a name.
I do my Scopas Tangs name is Scope
Yellow Tangs name is Yeller'
Lyretail Hawks name is Hawkfisherman or Hawk
Snowflake Eel is Snowflake
Green Mandarin is Manny or Flutter
Red Scooter Dragonet is Scoot Scoot
Lawnmower Blenny is Benny the Blenny
7 Blue Green Chromis are the Blue Man Group or the 7 Dwarfs
Clownfish pair is Marlena and Nemo
Bi-Color Pseudochromis is Dotty
Male Square Anthias is Guapo
Cleaner Shrimp are Robinson Crusoe and Jacque Custo
Basically all my fish's names are there species just with a twist. I named the cleaner shrimp those names since they are brave enough to actually clean the inside of my snowflake eels mouth which he regularly allows.
I know you were I had to get my poke in too. My dad loves my hawkfish he's the one who named him Hawk. He also gave my mandarin the name flutter as he just flutters around the tank like a hummingbird.
I usually don't...I let the girls who visit my tank do the naming, because they always ask what the names are. I tell them, and any new ones without names I give them the option to name it!
Male clown: Bering (named by my brother)
Female clown: Aaralyn (named by my brother)
Midas Blenny: Lenny (the blenny)
Psychadelic Mandarin: Ziggy
Cleaner Shrimp: Shrimp Daddy
I love to name my fish. Why? Because I feel like I can pay better individual attention to an animal that has been given a special name just for itself. I have followed two themes so far. When I first came into the hobby, I named my fish after places such as cities, towns, or villages. Now I prefer to name my fish after greek gods, goddesses, spirits and deities that best match their personalities.
In my 29 gallon I have:
Persephone - named for the greek goddess persephone.
Bryn - Bryn was named after a small village in England.
In my 15 Gallon I have:
Cerberus - Cerbie for short, named after the 3 headed hound that guards hades.
My first and favorite clown was Chester. She was named after another english village.
My kids name my fish now. One is 7 years old and the other is 3.
the only rule that I have is that they're naming a species, not just an individual specimen. for example, our Flame Hawk, named Fred, jumped out a couple of months ago. When we get another one, eventually, its name will be Fred, also.
yellow tangs are called Bob.
yellow coris wrasse is called bananaPants
the spotted mandarinfish is called Turtleman
I have a very large, territorial and overly aggressive female maroon clown. I have had her for about 18 years. About 15 years ago, I was scraping the front glass and watching TV at the same time. She bit me when I wasn't looking and I flinched. My elbow slammed into the canopy and I yelled at her "You b!@#h". It stuck.
Clowns - George & Gracie
Mandarin - Yoda
Lawnmower Blenny - Pedro
Mimic Filefish - Filo
Had a scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp named Kobyashi because he ate EVERYTHING including stealing food from Elton (total diva) the flower anemone, but then he became nem food. RIP Kob!!!
Had a massive emerald crab named Mongo. Died for unknown reasons
Just picked up some big turbo snails including one the size of a racquet ball. His name is William Wallace (my son picked that as he scaled the tank for FREEDOMMMMMMMMM)
