Do you run UV sterilizers

Do any of you run a UV sterilizer? If so is it on a reef? Are they any help for killing ich? I know its not a cure but will it actually reduce them helping the fish heal then overtime kill them or help keep them from coming back? Was thinking of getting one to help my current ich issue as well as other benefits they claim to do.

UV sterilzers are more for reduction of free-floating algae to clear up water rather than for parasite reduction. As they only potentially kill what goes through the actual UV pipe, any parasites that remain hanging out and life cycling within the confines of the actual DT are untouched. Given the vast quantity of these parasites throughout the life cycle, it is unlikely even a tiny dent is put into the population, meaning they will continue to thrive regardless if some are killed via UV.

But, in theory, at least some are killed before they reproduce, but IMO not enough to warrant having to deal with an additional piece of equipment.

UV is only useful to minimize the spread of pathogens from one tank to another in multi tank systems. But it is inefficient to eliminate ich in an already infected tank.

I agree. As a water clarifier, however, it is excellent, although in my opinion not worthwhile as other means work as well.
