Have never seen zoas actually take in food. I find keeping consist water parameters is all I need
Hi Fridat Night: you're not alone!
I've heard that from many zoa keepers.
I don't really know why some people say that, better, why their zoas don't eat.
Did you actually tried to target feed the polyps?
All my zoanthids grab their foods, independent of their body size and shape.
Some are slower than others, for sure.
The small polyps (zoanthus spp.) tend to be little more passive in that matter, but they still grab the dry coral foods and eat. They don't really care for the food in the water column, but if I target feed they do eat. The small ones don't care for the liquid food nor for larger particles. That could be because they can't really fit the larger foods in their mouths.
Some people tend to feed their fishes a lot, so the polyps automatically are fed and that works great for them. I'm cautious when feeding my fish and give them only what they eat.
Zoanthids absorb nutrients from the water too, so the lights (zooxanthellae) and the absorption are probably enough to keep them growing/ reproducing.
I found that the dry coral foods are the best for me because doesn't trig any major algae bloom.
I like the feeding topic very much. Hope others could post their experiences so we all learn more!!
