Do you think this is overkill?

Do you think that the coralife 12" 2x18W fixture would be overkill on a 2.5gal?

Does anyone have one of these? How bright is it?

Well no SPS, not a realy big fan. Zoos of course :) and maybe an acan or two. I have a sweet little brain that would look neat.

I wanted to see if anyone had one already and how much heat it produces.

Not overkill, should work out well. I had one that I retrofitted into my canopy...

They put out quite a bit of heat because I believe those ballasts are magnetic. I remember not being able to touch the housing, and when I put my moonlights in with the bulbs it burned the plastic. It is a very hot setup, and would be trouble for a 2.5 gallon tank with no fan.

I might be able to get one for a good deal, its that or fork out for the satellite sweet a$$ one but I dont want to do that. :)

What's the general rule for watts per gallon on a small reef setup? I might be going with a 10 gal or a tru vu model 12 or possibly my 20l with an AC 110 and don't know what lighting to go with. (sorry to thread jack, just trying to not create another thread)

Watts/gallon isn't really a good system to go by. For example, my 70 watt MH is a much better light (more PAR) than my old 76 watts of power compact.

A lot of LFS will say 5 watts / gallon. I would say that is pretty true with any mushrooms or zoos, etc., but once you get into the more light demanding corals it is all different.

yeah, bennerkla has the right idea, Over my 30 gallon I run 150 watts of HQI-Metal halide (20k) and also another 130 in actinic. (which if anyones counting thats about 9.5 wpg.) Seems like too much. It's not. It's all about heat.

On my 10 gallon I run 130 watt PC lights. 13 wpg, nothing bleaches because its PC, you can never have too much PC light if you can keep it cool. Whereas, when I had the 175 (single ended) XM Metal halide 10k most everything inside (even with the light a foot above the tank.) It raised the temperature of the tank within one hour 4 degrees. My advice is try it, get a personal fan from wal-mart or something, try to keep it cool if it overheats, rethink your setup.

(oh and by the way, I keep about 20 different types of corals in my 30 gal, and a few in my 10 gal. And i have mushrooms and zoo's also plenty of other softies...no problems.
good luck

that's the 10 gallon pre-anything.
