I rarely run Carbon, i only use it when i have an upset and my hammer starts to ooze.
I guess with a nano tank i may not see the "yellowing" as i only look across 18" of water. I have noticed that my corals, sps in particular, don't look so hot or vibrant when i use it. May be from the chemical warfare from the hammer, i usually leave it in there for 2 weeks in a reactor so i assume the chemicals are stripped out by then.
Once i pull the carbon out everything starts to come back. So for me with a small total volume i am very careful with the use of carbon. I find that bi-weekly 20% water changes are better and more forgiving for my system.
