Does a breeding setup have to be species only?

In other words, a tank only dedicated to the species in question.

Reason being that the presence of other kinds of fish will negatively affect willingness to spawn (this is after all a closed system not an ocean with vast amounts of space), as well as predation of eggs (I believe even most passive fish will eat eggs, unless they are toxic).

Therefore a community tank is out of the question if breeding is to be attempted seriously.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I want to go about my breeding project in the best way possible.

Usually any successful breedings whether be fish, reptiles or birds, species specific enclosures are usually best for most of the statements you posted above. No territory disputes, no stress due to excessive guarding/chasing and specific perimeters can be set easier.

I used to have some fresh water angels that bred more then rabbits with a tank full of other species. Of coarse almost none of the fry survived more then a day or two if they even managed to make it that far but they did breed even with company.

Many MO breeders keep pairs with other pairs (different genus/species). Really depends on what is being kept together. Rather then us trying to sess out what species, tell us what you are thinking in terms of keeping together.
