Does anyone know what species of red algea this is?

Hey so I went to my lfs and got some live rock for my tank I also pick some red algae up for free as it "just sprouted one day" according to the guy. Does anyone know what type this is.please don't ask about my tank or anything like that I just want to know what type, good/bad ect....

There is no such thing as red grape Caulerpa, it would be a species of Botryocladia.

Could be that (botryocladia). There is a desirable species that has diminished stipes and is mostly air bladders as your photo suggests. Most desirable species are prostrate and have visible stipes. I have a few species in my tank, including a common pest species in my sump that tends to float. That pest must be effective at releasing spores because new clumps show up every now and then (where as the 'desirable' species grow vegetatively off individuals).

This is definitely NOT Botryocladia botryoides, which has branches and grows high.
Probably Botryocladia skottsbergii aka red Valonia or red bubble algae.
If you ever heard about green Valonia... this algae is quite invasive in a coral tank.

Still ok for a marine planted tank though.

I have never seen Botryocladia skottsbergi. Reefcleaners info article list it as a nuisance algae. Thank you for the latin name, however, I do like
Red Valonia.

Anyway, i like this algae too, but wouldn't recommend it for a... peaceful coral tank
