Does anyone put their rocks on back of tank?

Im contemplating on moving my rocks from the middle of the tank to the back of the tank to have more room in the front. I've always been told that the back of the tank needs to be clear of rocks for better circulation. Does anyone here see a problem with doing this and how many of you have your tank setup this way?

Thanks for the input.

What I did with my first tank was place all the rock in the center of the tank. Which didnt leave much room in the front for the tank. and what went on in the back side I couldnt see anyway. With my new 75 I place all the rock close to the back leaving about an inch from the glass for water flow....and Im very happy with the setup

i have it setup with the rock up against the back but i also have my return running behind all the rocks to make sure i dont have any dead spots on the rock.

its better to have them in the middle so that you have circulation. I had my rocks setup to be in the back and the water movement was not great . when the food would get to the back that was the end of that. After going throw hell for like 3 months with my set up like that, about 3 days ago i re did my rock set up. it made a hell of difference. good luck

I have my rock against the back. Its been like that since I've had the tank. No problems so far. Give me a lot more space to put corals in.

I like that middle because you can't scrap the back glass without disrupting the tank by removing the rocks and corals for cleaning. Also from the pics in your gallery you keep it very clean, unless old pics.

I leaned mine across the back leaving 2 inches on the bottom and tapering them up. I put a maxi-jet 1200 in the lower right corner and have it blow behind the rocks. Works great and it stays clean as a whistle......

Yeah, you should see Rogger's smaller tank. He built a nice big pile in the middle and I believe it goes all the way to the back glass. He plumbed in his returns inside the rocks to alleviate dead spots. I'm sure you could do the same with a powerhead or two.

I have my rocks in the middle of my 180, and I've noticed an added benefit with my fish. I have a few shy species and they do very well since they can hide in the back when they're frightened and venture to the front when they are feeling brave. Even with the choice, my fish are almost always in the front of my tank (especially around feeding time!)

In my 36, I have a similar setup as sasscuba, with a powerhead blowing across the back behind the rocks. The back of that tank is spotless...the cleanest area of the tank!

I think if your tank is small enough that a powerhead could keep the back of the rocks clean, then that works just great. But if you have a larger tank, it may not be feasible or it may require multiple powerheads behind the rocks.

It probably just comes down to personal preference...people keep their aquascaping both ways and they work just fine.

I have a 30 and my rocks are up against the back. i have a cave that leads back there that my moroon has made his home. i dont have any pluming or power head back there but my coral banded shrimp and team of crabs constantly keep it clean back there.

i JUST got done moving my rock from the center to the back wall thats funny this came up, I hope it works better and sure gives me more room, right now its so cloudy i have to wait to place the corals, it started out becuase i wanted to remove a little bicolor pseoudo that is harrasing my wrasses. but turned into a two day project now... im happier to have the extra room i wanted but need more rock now to build height.

most of my rock is also on the back of my 45g. with only 12" depth it was the only thing I could do.... :\ working so far havnt had any problems

My bottom rocks are about 2 inches from the back while the top rocks are leaning on the back of the tank. Ive had absolutely no problems, I do however have my return bouncing off of the glass and flowing through the rocks. I guess if everyone hasn't made it evident enough, it just comes down to having the proper flow throughout your tank, and youll be just fine :) good luck!

All my rocks are stacked up in the back against my overflows w/o major issues as of right now-perhaps a couple more PH's in the future but as of now all is well.
