Does carbon take out trace elements?

I have an 18g nano that I have had running for almost a year with carbon. Everything is doing great along with my new 33g tank that I run a phosban reactor with carbon in it. I was talking to a buddy of mine and he said that carbon takes out trace elements? Just seeing if thats true and some comments would help

Thanks

It's true but probably not worth worrying about. It will be pretty negligable and routine water changes will replenish what's taken out. You won't measure any drop in Ca or anything like that. Plenty of people use carbon routinely.

It's quite amazing that with all of the carbon manufacturers out there, that there is no study (that I am aware of) that shows a before and after assay of marine water when filtered with carbon. I've read ones that use blue dye, but that's hardly a test of what carbon is removing.
