I'm running a remote DSB in my sump. Presently, I have 2x24W T5 running 8 hours a day over the sump but I've been thinking of not running the light as the sump is full of coraline and nuisance algae.
I am pretty sure a DSB does not need light. I see no reason that it would since the de-nitrifying bacteria are deep in the sand bed and will not get any light at all.
