Does head pressure measure only upward flow?

Assuming 12 vertical 10 horizontal, 1 ball valve, 4 unions and 4 elbows. You will get 15 feet head loss 1" dia pipe will give you aprox 680 gph.

So 1" on the return and 11/4 to 11/2" on the inlet will do.

 You will be OK. Although theoretical drain calls for 600 gph, I am sure such a high head on the drain too will pull more than that. Even if it does not, having 680 gal (under ideal conditions) will give you some additional 80 gph that I am sure will be compensated by other unforseen pressure drops or pump efficiency drop due to dirt or normal Carbonate accumulation. If you got to go that far I would recommend instead of using rigid PVC try to use a single lenght of flexible PVC. from the pump to the tank. That will make threading and installing easier, you will need less fittings and you will minimize the number of elbows as your turns will be smoother.
