Does my overflow have to match my return pumps GPH?

Well the fix for the Quiet One did not work. So time for a pump change.
To may power outages right now to take a chance on these pumps.
Did you go with the 1" or 1 1/2" drain???
I think a 1" will be just find that's what I have on my 40RR.
If you go with a 1" drain make your durso-pipe out of 1 1/4" PVC make sure you use 1 1/4". 1" will not work well, I know I tryed.

Hey DRC where did you place the Quiet One Pump? They wouldn't start up when the power was turned off? Maybe I won't go with them then. Calvin said it only took his about 20 to 30 seconds to start up again. How were you using them? Internally or externally? I am not sure yet. What pump are you thinking of getting? That really sucks. I liked the quiet one's.

Hey Theop. I am not using the siphon overflow though. I am going to drill the tank and run it through the pvc down to the sump. I don't like the siphon overflow because of the flood possibility. I live in an Apartment and it would be really bad news for me if it broke siphon. Thank you for the marine depot link.
I figured it out and it would be running up only 4 feet. Which would decrease the flow to 600 gph. So All I need to know is if 1 in bulkhead drilled to the tank would provide enough flow through my sump to keep up with the pump. What do you all think? Thank you.

I put the pump in my sump. I have and use Rios, so I now have a HF17 in there. I like it, I'm also going to try my Rio 3100 PLUS I have to. Quiet One nice pumps but if it doesn't start right up forget.
I would go with the 1", it works.
Remember 1 1/4" durso-pipe.

The point of the overflow comparison is that they had ones with a 1" and 1.5" drain. The bulkhead in the tank would be no worse than the overflow and would probably be faster. Based on that 1" should be able to handle 600gph easily.

Hi,
I am going with the 1in drain ordered the bits and everything. I also ordered my sand, and quiet one pump for the return. For my closed loop, should I have something that provides me with currents? Like OM Squirt or SCWD? I've heard some bad comments on those. I hear they end up failing over time. Thank you all for all of your help. I also have another question, would you guys go with an overflow box for some type of surface skimming or just a strainer over the bulkhead? Thanks. ;-) Can't wait to get this thing plumbed and going. I've been getting things together for 3 1/2 months! ugh! ;-)
