Here is my setup:

90g acrylic 48x18x24
Reefbreeder LED 48 Phanton w/ 120deg optics
2x hydor koralia circ pumps (1150gph)
1x hydor koralia circ pump (240gph)
Hydor wavemaker
Basement pump room w/ coralife external return pump
~10gall sump,
ETSS 700 downdraft skimmer w genx 40pcx pump
ATO (10gal bucket) gravity feed with overflow valve into sump
40g referigum w/par38 LED lights
BRS 75G RO/DI
BRS duel media reactor for GFO/Carbon

I ran reefs years ago, then went fish only (w/CUC) for 15 years, last year got back into reefing. Been running a softie tank, w/ leathers, frog spawn, zoo, torch coral etc.

My current project tank is a FOWR I want to turn into a SPS primary tank. About a month ago the fish all died – Brook, which was sad, but on the bright side I can now move forward with the SPS reef. The reefcleaners CUC is doing well, and the rock looks fine, coralline algae continues to grow. I’ve been throwing a little food in there daily to feed the CUC and keep the cycle going.

This weekend I’m going to plumb in the loop a 40gal tank for a referigum, and do a 99% WC. Also while the water is mostly out, going to drill a bunch of holes for frag plugs all over my rock. Then will work on getting my water quality PHOS, CAL, ALK and Mag in order Going to dose 2-part. I test with the red sea pro multi-kit. Then in a few weeks will add my first SPS frags and see how they do. Not going to all any fish for a few months until I am sure the parasite is gone and my water parameters are holding. I will continue to feed but just a small amount for the hermits and such ~ 1/4tsp of small pellets/day

I don’t have a controller or dosing pumps yet, but they are on my buy list. I plan on having money for the thanksgiving black Friday sale.

Here is my current list of items I'm working out. Free free to only reply to one area:

This skimmer is old – but I gotta tell you it is a beast. I’m not up on modern skimmers but is there any disadvantages to running an old school skimmer that uses bio-balls in the downdraft?

DSB in the referigum. I will run muti-types of macro alge and light it during night. However, I’m not sure if a DSB is good or not if so how deep?

DT has about 2inch of crush coral sand for looks. The CUC keeps it pretty clean so going to leave unless there are issues with sand in the DT.

Flow thru the referigum and sump is ~180gph. That means I only turn my DT 2x. I think that’s fine, my in DT circulation comes from the hydors. Any issues with circulation?

Any other tips to successful SPS? I really want to grow a tank that is just exploding w/ color.
