I was drunk, I apologize to anyone I offended with my novella. I stand by the gist of my post. Usually I just ignore people who poo poo something someone else is doing but since I was a potential target and I'd had a good night at the local bar. I couldn't help myself. Unfortunately I wasn't very professional.
On a different track, in line with this post there are even people who dose with Vodka. Ethanol. The reasons for this would take another novella to post for. To each his or her own.
According to information I have, natural seawater has iodine in various forms at a rough concentration of 0.06 ppm. (460 nmol/kg) If your anywhere near that your probably golden as long as it's in a form the corals can use.
If you feed your corals well, they probably are happy little pigs and get all the Iodine they would ever need from the food. Freshwater top offs, plus regular water changes, should easily replace any lost. If your shrimp and crabs are dying when they molt. Or if your Xenia or Gorgonians are having some issues you may wish to take a look at your Iodine levels. If your corals have bleached or are in the process of bleaching you may wish to dose with Iodine/lugols (per manufacturers instructions). Iodine loss isn't the result of the bleaching but is used to lessen the severity of coral bleaching and helps the coral's Xooxanthellae to recover much quicker.
Overdosing would be tragic. If you choose to supplement Iodine, stay close to the manufacturers suggested dosage unless you intend to experiment.
I hope this post restates my position without being an *** about it.
