Dosage for phyoplankton

Is there a recommended dosage for phyto? ml/gal or oz/gal? Is there a general rule of thumb?

This is what my bottle says:

Dosage:
Add daily one hour before lights out

Low Stock - 1ml for every 3gal
Medium Stock - 1ml for every 2gal
High Stock - 1ml for every 1gal

Edit - I followed this at first but eventually i thought " how could too much phyto hurt" so i just poured whateve i saw fit into the tank.

what are you trying to feed? when i had a clam i added enough to turn the water a tinted green once every 3-4 days in a 20 gallon tank.
