Dosing interceptor tomorrow

Pitcher Hill Reef Society
heres my schedule, let me know if i should change anything. also should i try to get my snails and crabs out and quarantine them? last time i did this treatment i didnt lose any shrimp , crabs or snails

estimated total volume= ~80-90 gallons ( with rock displacement)

currently mixing 32 gallons of saltwater, gonna wake up tomorrow and start heating it up for Friday. make sure its correct salinity obviously

cut 1 tablet of medium size dog interceptor , leaving me a little less than half the tablet. Crush the tablet, mix into a bunch of my saltwater as good as i can.

turn skimmer down so it doesnt produce any skimmate, remove filter socks and carbon (dispose of carbon and water in chamber, refill with fresh batch for Friday)

dump the dose in around afternoon tomorrow, watch the suckers die.

wake up friday, do a 32 gallon water change, run fresh carbon. and repeat again next week.

Looks good Brando. I'd repeat it twice, making it 3 times total. It's really not that big a deal, for those that haven't done it before. Everything should turn out just fine.

not sure about how much of a the smaller tablet to use, if you were to use a 51-100 tablet it would be a quarter.

I was told to plug the skimmer intake so it ran, but did not bubble (I used a one way air valve backwards). mix well, microwave with a cup of tank water for a minute to help.

steps:

mix
remove socks
mix
plug skimmer
mix
dump carbon and put canister back in empty
mix
pour in
wait 8 hours
fresh carbon (rinse with existing water)
water change

enjoy knowing they took a beating
repeat in 7 days
repeat again in 7 days.

Brandon- I can't remember the source, but I remember reading somewhere that the smaller size pills don't contain nearly as much Milbemycin Oxime (the main ingredient that kills the Red Bugs) as the large pill does. With that being said, the treatment should still work fine- just remember to keep an eye out for survivors and repeat the dose if needed. I would recommend removing any crustaceans (shrimp/crabs) temporarily as a strong enough dose will surely kill them. Other than that, I have never had an issue w/ Interceptor, even at dosages much stronger than the recommended amount. If anything, you'll notice an increase of color and PE ! :) JMO, HTH.

Blurry; just out of curiosity, what does microwaving the treatment water do?

guys, i dont know how i misspoke, but im not using small pills, im using the correct 50-100 lbs size

do people usually try to remove crabs and snails?

1/4 of a pill is in now, dumped it into my return chamber in my sump. sit back and watch the carnage!

-in the tank AND the 3 gallon pico tank for the crabs and snails lol

It works fairly quickly. I remember being puckered about it when I first dosed it. The last time I did it as I was trying to fight an unknown scurge against some Aussie LPS. At that point I just smashed up a pill and tossed it in. I didn't get all nuts about doing a huge water change or running fresh carbon. I just didn't run carbon.

I had emailed Melev (Marc Levenson) and he assured me, it was no big deal, unless you were a shrimp or crab. He was right.

You're doing the right things Brando, it'll be fine. BUT, if you don't repeat it 2 more times, you could be doing yourself a disservice pal. I had those little buggers come back on me. So now, it's 3x or 0x.

hmm well last time i didnt lose my pistol shrimp.

i still have the same pistol and now a emerald and a anemone crab (which id hate to lose) but i cant get them out.

Do the greatest good for the greatest numbers. My corals always take (took) precedence. You can replace the crustaceans, though suboptimal, if need be. Your colonies would be much more difficult to replace.

I could be wrong here, but i wouldnt microwave the pill, use warm water yes, but actually tossing the pill in the microwave could be problematic. The active ingredient has a kexotimine (oxime) in the structure (if this is the active site idk) but there has been publications on this functionality going through a microwave assisted beckmann rearrangement to lead to an amide.

I was just gonna say that...

oh mark youre so scientific, i didnt nuke the interceptor, i just crushed it up and mixed in with my water. I think my problem is that my interceptor is expired by 4 years! :eek2: oh well, good thing blurry has some extra fresh ammo. im gonna re-dose tomorrow. cant wait to watch these suckers burn

I just lost my red planet in a months time, I do have one acro that is doing fine,(plum crazy) I wonder if ti would be good preventive measures to try this.

I don't think it would help you, with the acros, if you don't see the red bugs. They should be visible with the naked eye. Do you have any type of camera to post pics?

thanks for the explanation - I wont be nuking interceptor anymore!

The recommended dose I have read is 1 large pill per 100g. I dosed 1 pill in my 125g (with rock displacement) and the bugs died within 2 hours. No signs of stress on anything else in the tank. I did remove my cleaner shrimp before dosing.
