Dosing pumps or Reactors?

So what did we decide?

We decided that at the next PN, someone needs to be responsible for making sure I don't run out of burgers or beer. I drink two beers for every burger I consume . . . so someone needs to supply me with a "balanced" supply of burgers and beer. That means a 1:1 ratio of beer to burgers . . . no . . . wait . . . I'll need two beers then a burger or maybe a beer and a half a burger . . . or equal numbers of burgers and beers supplemented by an occasional order of onion rings.

Ugh, let's just have the next PN at Acrohead's place. He seems like a good guy.

this seems very logical. i think that we should implement this for me as well.

This made my No3 spike I'm out:uhoh3:

So what size of beer we talking here? That would create another variable... And then the size of burger.. Single, double, triple???? How many ounces????? Fat content??????? Alcohol content of said beer/beers??????????

This is complicated!!

I find that I meet my "system's" goals when I have a higher ratio of beer to burgers...something more along the lines of 4:1 or 5:1. Anything less and I max out on system volume before I max out on blood alcohol level. [emoji1]

i believe in the reactor and beer. I think my next tank project will be a beer reactor. until then i will keep drinking beer and staring at my kalk reactor.

So to actually help the OP and elaborate on my previous posts, I'd like to explain my two biggest issues with dosing 2 or 3 part in SPS heavy systems.

1. Maintaining balanced dosing can be difficult. I found making consistent solutions tricky. I produce 5 gallon batches and weigh out the CaCl and baked baking soda on a digital scale plus carefully measure the volume of RODI water used in the solutions. Despite my careful measurements the solutions are never perfect and regular testing and adjustments are needed for at least a couple weeks after making a new batch. Plus even though I carefully calibrate my dosing pumps they tend to deviate and need additional recalibration every few months.

2. Adding CaCl as opposed to a calcium reactor adds chloride which increases salinity overtime and creates an ionic imbalance in the tank. This can be counteracted with regular water changes but it certainly something to consider if you dose a lot as I was in my SPS tank.

In addition to to the previously mentioned benefits of adding trace elements at the proper concentrations for coral growth (particularly strontium) these are the reasons I would go with a reactor for a tank with heavy Ca and Alk demands in the future.

That said I'm still dosing in my softy dominate tank and it's working well for me.
