Double Pane Window Glass

Is this type of glass okay for using on tanks? It's about 1/4" thick, and it would only be on about a 5 gallon cube tank for my job. 10x10x10. I can get it cut for free, so I am just wondering if it would be okay to use or not

When I fist started my first tank I worked at a factory that made windows. I had them make me a double paned window filled with argon to place under my 400w MH.
It worked great. I could place the pendent right on the glass and the you could still touch the under side of the glass.
I had them use regular glass and none of the low e stuff.

I'm just wondering if anyone know's how high and wide I can span a piece of this glass before it starts to bow too much. I know there will be some bowing, but I just want to be safe! I'll brace it for sure!

i dont know why you want to use double payne glass? Usually it is thinner and tempered if I am not mistaken. I would look at getting thicker single payne glass. and you should not have any bowing what so ever. Espessialy with glass you dont want bowing. When glass bows it stresses really easily and can shatter quite fast.

I had a tank with 'thermopane' window in it, it was a fiberglas tank though. But we replaced the window due to a leaking seal with a single piece of glass. I believe the recomendation was that the glass in the thermopane should hold the water with 1 piece. As in the inside piece must be sufficiently strong to suppor the weight.

I am curious why you'd want to use this on a cube? Wouldn't it be more difficult to seal the edges with double pane glass than single? As well as the appearance of the thicker seams.

Just a thought.

I want to use it b/c its FREE! I have it here at my job that they were going to throw away. I'll find out if it is tempered pretty easily. I'm going to try and drill it before I have it cut

if you are doing something that small you could just call a local glass shop and have them cut up a few small pieces. It would not be that expessive. I think using double payne glass is not going to make a very attractive tank, and could pose more problems than it is worth.

Okay, so looking at the glass, we may be talking about different things. What this looks like is two pieces of glass, glued together. They look like 1/8" glass, with one on top of the other. Will this make a difference?

OK, so you have laminated glass not Double Payne glass. That would be alot easier to use than double payne glass. I am sure that would work. But if it is a combined thickness of only 1/8 I still wouldnt use it. I would always use at least 1/4 glass no matter what. That thin of glass is awfull brittle and not very strong.

afaik - use polarised glasses, and look at the glass and if you see the checkerboard type apperance then its tempered. i know you have laminated glass, but the living aquarium supposdly has information about doing insulated tanks through the use of double payne glass. i have not read it yet, its on order.

Glass is cheap, 10x10 pieces are VERY CHEAP. Why not just go buy the right stuff and have it cut. You know what you are buying and know what to expect.

Yea, I may end up doing just that if this doesnt work out! I know how inexpensive glass is, but if it's free, why not try it?

When you are dealing with laminated glass you dont know what you are getting, windshield glass is laminated and tempered, so I am going to guess that the stuff you have is probably tempered, and usless. I am sure you can get the glass cut from 3/8" glass in the right sizes for under $30. I know I have several differant sizes cut from my local glass company and it was really cheap.

This glass is used in an office building on internal office's. I'm not sure that it's tempered, but I'm almost positive it's not

I know how inexpensive glass is, but if it's free, why not try it? [/B]

I dunno... a friend had is 900CC GSXR run over by a car. the engine was fine and free. We welded it to a cheap go-cart frame and equiped the steering wheel with a clutch and the seat with a lever shifter. 900CC go cart with 5 speeds and and 1/5 the weight of the bike that the engine used to propel to 180 MPH.

5 people who live for speed and danger and 10 minutes in the parking lot with the beast, we ALL realized that though it was free, it was a VERY BAD idea. 2 hours after that the torches were back out and the beast was reduced to scrap and the "free" engine given to the local bike shop.

Just because something is free, does not mean that you MUST find a way to use it :)
