Dow Flake, Mag Flake, Baking soda

Has anyone found it anywhere locally, maybe a cement shop somewhere around here has it? Also Mag Flake? I am going to start making my own two part and would rather try to find it locally than to pay all that shipping on a $15 dollar product. Or if you know of a place where shipping is cheaper. Or would folks be interested in a group buy maybe we could get a pallet and really cut down on the shipping. I would think that some of these feed and seed stores could get it but everyone said they can''t order it.

I am guessing sams is the best place to pickup the backing soda in bulk 12lbs at about 5 bucks?

Ok I can schedule a run up that way can you give me some stores and or addresses and phone numbers. I need to come up that way and pick up a few frags from H@rry.

Oh and how cheaply can I get them are they in bulk 50lb bags?

Send a message to Bob at beaslbob@aol.com
He has some brand name Magflake and Dowflake plus a lot of generic brand stuff (still pure MgCl and CaCl.) I still have the most of 50 lbs Peladow in a bucket. I can let you have 20 lbs of it for $15 if you are interested.

Beaslbob and I did some research and found that an outfit called Brenntag in Madison carries CaCl (not Dowflake but Bob tested it and it works just as well without a problem) and CaOH (food grade lime from Mississippi Lime Co.) and a feed store carries magnesium. I got my bucket of Peladow from a friend up north when he came down to see me and my husband.

Here's information for Brenntag. They don't normally sell to an individual, but they do a special favor for us. You can mention that I buy the lime periodically for North Alabama Reef Club.

I should have on my work computer the spec for CaCl that Brenntag carries and the contact name. Bob called the manufacturer of the CaCl and confirmed that it is the very same stuff Dowflake is made of. A 50 lbs bag of it was something like $32 if I recall correctly.

If they prefer larger orders I'd be in on a group buy (all 3 if possible) if someone wants to handle it.

Allen I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but you can buy a 50 pound bag of sodium bicarbonate at Nix pool in Jasper. I do not remember how much I paid for it.

The contact name at Brenntag in Madison is Linda Laird.
I still have PDF copies of MSDS sheet and COA for Calcium Chloride by Tetra Chemical (the briner's grade) that they carry. PM me if you would like to take a look at them.

For Dowflake check at a Swimming Pool supply or maintenance company. Magflake is a lot harder to find economically.

Another source up here is Sherman Industries at 250 palmer road, Madison. Their phone number is 772-7490. They sell a 25 lbs bag of CaCl for $11. Beaslbob said that it was Dowflake.

Correction!!

Beaslbob said that the CaCl sold by Sherman Industries is not Dowflake. 94 to 97% anhydrous (no water molecules bound to it) CaCl from Cal Chem. A bag of Dowflake (77 to 79% CaCl) was from a place called Alliance in Madison. Their price was $20 for a 50 lbs bag.
