Does anyone know where to get Dowflake in Orlando?? I am wanting to make my own 2-Part following Randy's program but I am having no luck locating it. I tried ordering it from Tec Products on-line but they no longer sell to the general public.

Thanks

If you want to use Dow products I would suggest getting it from Twopartsolution.com . He has proven to have pre 2007 DOW.

As of Jan 1 2007 Dow no longer sells Bromide. They used to extract it from their calcium chloride leaving a pretty pure form of Ca Cl. Since they are no longer selling it they are obviously not removing it from it anymore and now contains alarming levels of it.

Although Bromide is natural in seawater it is not natural at the extreme levels that it is in Dow's Ca cl. It can convert into bromate that is toxic.

There are mfg's of Ca cl that do not have the Bromide levels that Dow now has and we should see some new names come to light soon.

Go to any swimming pool supply store. They will have dow or tetra flake. I would stay away from the Dow flake due to the bromide issue.

Yes, it's the same thing as the Dow. I bought a 50lb bag of it. I just finished the first gallon that i made with it, and it works fine.

DuPont also makes a calcium that you can get at a pool supply that has 94% Calcium Chloride purity. I think they even sell the dupont at Lowes.

Just be careful of what you choose to use. Research needs to be done to make sure there are no minor trace elements in the material such as Bromide.

I have the MSDS sheets for the latest batches of Dow/Peladow peadlow materials (exact same as Dow flake, just less water) and it reads a 97-98% purity of calcium chloride. We know that it does contain very high levels of Bromide, it does NOT list it on their MSDS sheet.

The chemistry mods say that the tests that need to be done are very expensive and lengthy. They themselves did not know about the new 2007 Bromide issue until I tripped across it while reading through Dow's website.

The guys over at Twopartsolution are all over it & have spent alot of time & effort insuring their products are right. They are also about the same price as getting these products from local pool shops. You just have to buy a bit more of it.

And also pay for shipping ($25 on a $35 order)- OUCH!

On the other hand, they have a reefclub group-buy promotion- about 30% of regular prices- but would need at least 10 club members involved.

From TwoPartSolution the 15lb bucket of Ca is $24 plus $13 shipping. Thats $37 total. I paid just over $30 for "hardness plus" from Leslies Pool Supplies locally, so the price is actually pretty comparable.

Even if it were 10 or 20 dollars more, 15 lbs is a pretty good supply of calcium. For $20 its just not worth trying to beat the system IMO. I'd need to see a huge pay difference to roll the dice on a system that I've spent so many thousands on.
