dowflake/magflake

Tried to pick up a few 50lbs bag from Buckeye Field Supply the last time I was in Cinci. Unfortunately, even if I prepaid, they wouldn't let me pick it up.

The Current Dow Flake is no longer acceptable for a 2 part solution as it's composition has changed and has a high level of Bromine in it ( per Randy Holmes Farley) this also includes Peladow and most other brands of Calcium Chloride available for Ice Melting and Cement additives, Bulk Reef Supply does offer pure Calcium Chloride for a decent price though

Gary,

Forgive me if I don't have the latest, but I was following those threads closely. As far as I remember, unless there has been new documentation, the elevated levels of bromine have not been proven to have any negetive effect on salt water aquariums. Also, with regular water changes, I thought the potenial higher concentrations were well mitigated.

I don't remember Randy writing any results or advice in this regard, just observations. Has there been new evidence, or did I misread those threads?

I have been using Prestone Driveway Heat (a DOW product) with Randys recipe number one. I haven't followed those threads in quite a while, but I haven't noticed any ill effects on my corals.

Just throwing this out there. It's almost time for me to whip up a new batch. I think I'm going to order from Two Part Solution. IIRC, they source product without the elevated levels of Bromine.

Respectfully,
Ben

What is meant by the "current" Dowflake. I have a bag that's over a year old. Is this old enough to be considered safe?

That's a much more recent thread than I have followed. But it still does not answer the question.

I think there is more and different data needed to make an informed decision.

While anything Randy says, I would listen to as a very informed assessment, an expressed *reluctance* by about "high demand" tanks does not necessarily apply to me or my tank. I'd love to know more. There seems yet to be any evidence about long term use or negetive effects. Even Boomers follow-up begs more information.

I'm not debating here. I'd like to know as much as the next guy.

I followed the threads over the last few months in the chemistry forum and there is date coding/lot numbers on the bags that was difficult to follow and Randys thoughts were anything less than a year old is questionable, if memory serves me correctly there is also issues with the mag flake and my following of the threads when Randy was questioned what do we do know his response was I guess we by a 2 part solution and now he is taking a hiatus from the boards again, so we have no definite answers

Oh rats! Well...better safe than sorry, I suppose. I am ditching the DOW for another product, but I'd still like to know.

Happy reefing.

If Randy was on hiatus, he's back. Here are some of his recent comments on this subject found in this thread: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1370223

I believe that even the new Dowflake has its uses, like boosting low calcium salt mixes or occasional tanks boosts, but not for high volume daily supplements.

"Are you saying that I should scrap this two part and switch to something new?"
No, the two part solution folks are selling old material before Dow changed the product, at least by their claim. So it is fine.

In this same thread, Boomer makes some supplier recommendations. There are also some recipe comments. Best to read the whole thread. Even the sticky-ed one in the reef chemistry forum to catch up on this stuff. I'm a pretty low volume doser and will make a switch (probably to Bulk Reef Supply material) when I'm out of my current stuff.

Happy reading and reefing.
