Downsizing from 110 to ?

I've been MIA from RC for the past year. My husband Brian and I attended a few ARK meetings at Bob's store prior to that. We're looking to downsize from our 110g. He has bad arthritis in his wrist and it's hard to do water changes, plus it's hard to find the time for the big water changes a 110 requires. We're trying to decide if we want to set up the 37g we have and find a canopy with lights for it that will work for coral, or try to trade for some kind of an all-in-one setup (around 30g or so). We want to move over 2 of the frogspawns, 1 duncan, a leather and a couple of mushroom-type corals, plus a clown fish (and would then probably get another small fish or two). Any recommendations? Not sure which way to go.

Thanks,
Susan

Hi Susan, nice to hear from you again. Sorry to hear about Brian's Arthritis. I have never used a AIO, but know there are a ton of them out there to choose from.

The corals you listed do not need a ton of light, so I would imagine a few tubes of T5s would be fine over a 37g, if you went that route.

We have a bunch of very kind members who I'm sure would be happy to help you out with water changes, I myself included if you wanted to stay the course. We also have some VERY smart people in this club that could help you make water changes easier. I myself do very little physical work for my water changes, the wheel base for my Brute trashcan and a python make changes very easy for me. Can you explain your process, maybe we can help make it easier.

I would post what you have to trade and what you are looking for both here and in the CTARS forum, maybe someone is looking to upgrade.

Good luck.

Thanks! We have a 110g with a cherry base/canopy with T5 lights, 30g ADHI refugium, Magnum canister filter, Koralia powerhead, heater. I put it on Craigslist Saturday and someone was set to buy it but never showed up and hasn't been heard from again. Someone else wants it but can't afford to buy it (I had listed it at $500 with all the rock, coral and critters). I think we're going to set up the 37g and put some T5's over it. I found online today that I can get 30" ones to fit it. I need to see if Bob's back from Florida. He said he'd help us if we didn't sell it before he got back.

Susan,

Health comes first, but doesn't mean you have to downsize. If you haven't settled on selling yet, I can recommend a continuous water change (if you have space for 2 big brutes) setup. It will eliminate all the howling of water and basically require you to turn a few switches once a month (or longer, depending on how big brutes you can get) and that's it. If you're interested we can expand on that idea.

If you really want to get a smaller tank, I agree with Joe, few T5s will be more than enough for the corals you listed.

Good luck and if you need help, just ask :)

Good luck with the sale - that's a great deal imho. 30" fixtures are pretty common, you should have no issues getting one. Like Georgi said, if you need help, just ask :)

What does green/purple frogspawn go for a head these days? I have a bunch. Also have a large green/goldish-brown one from Bob's that could probably be fragged. There's also a huge leather that could be fragged - it's grown onto several other rocks now.

I'm going to hit Bob's tomorrow to see if he has any 30" light fixtures. I did find some online but I'm hoping to set up the 37g on Saturday.

I'm looking forward to easier water changes, a smaller electric bill, plus now there will be nothing in the way of getting rid of the old 1968 panelling in the room! :-)

Susan
