I've never used it on fish (or anything else for that matter) but I'm curious how you're getting it? Most antibiotics have directions on use if it's intended for the aquarium... so if you're getting it elsewhere and not intended for aquarium use then at best you're guessing at what amount to dose.
I've used it for a staph infection on me - but never in a fish tank. I wouldn't figure it to be any different then other antibiotics in the way of dosing, it will knock out a bio-filter in short order though. I know this is Reef Central, but perhaps an e-mail to the folks at Webwebmedia would be a good idea, they seem like they have tried everything and anything that you could possibly use to medicate a tank.
We need to know what your treating for to assist? Is it fish are you treating the whole tank a qt system? Doxycycline doesnt do best in saltwater application due to its binding nature with the elements such as Cal, Mag, ect.
contrary to tetracycline and oxytetracycline, doxycycline does NOT get inactivated by high PH level or high calcium or iron level - that is why it is very suitable for marine aquariums
Doxycycline is a oxytetracycline derived antibiotic with very wide spectrum activity and little resistance - contrary to tetracycline
I plan on using it for treatment of bacteria based infections in fish (in my quarentine tank as it will wipe out the good bacterias as well)
