Dream of a huge out door reef

I have a "dream" which may never happen but you never know. I was wondering if anyone has or knows of some one who has done a large out door reef tank or even shark/ray tank? I'd like some ideas of how to accomplish such a dream. Any pictures of outside tanks, plumbing and set up? I'd love to take advantage of the sunshine where I live. This hobby really makes you want more and more...Im sure you all know what I mean...lol.

...every time I visit the parents house in San Diego, and look at there pool.... I dream of making it into a giant Swimming pool reef system... ;)

there was someone who was doing a project like that a few ears back but i think there a problem in teh foundation of hte pool and the whole thing needed to be torned down and he never set the thing in motion again. He even had a few sharks in there too for which he was getting flamed her in RC for.

the aquarium by me has an outdoor pool thats roughtly 25' by 10' by 8' that you can snorkel in but becuase its in ny its only set up in the summer and in the winter they move everything inside to a holding tank but there is lr in it but i dont rember if there is coral in it

wow, Thanks that tank is pretty cool. I want to do something that I can swim in. A dream is a wish your heart makes...right?

If only it was that easy :bum:

I would say the only real problem with having such a tank, would have to be with heating and or cooling the water. If you can figure an inexpensive way of doing that, it shoudl be really simple. The only other obstacle that you would or may encounter, is that you may have to set up some sort of a filter to dimm down the sun, as most of our corals are not really collected within lets say 5 feet from the surface. So unless you plan on building a 20 foot deep pool, then I would say you may need to use a screen, kind of what they use in greenhouses to shade the tank. I hope that helps you

I have the same dream. I am thinking of building a reef pool in a greenhouse, still trying to find more info on doing this. Anything is possible if you put your heart and soul in it.

I think I may have a way to save on electric bills as far as the heater goes. My parents pool is heated by solar panels which seems to work great for the pool keeps the temp from 76-80.
I never thought about the sun being too much...hmmm. Time to look into green houses I guess! Thank-you all for imput. I think the more I talk about this dream the more I want to do it!!
