To start off I had bad planning went I setup my sump/ refugium. Should have went with a bigger tank. anyhow now I want to add a 5.5 gal tank for my filter socks and run so carbon bags. The tank is going to sit on the side above my sump and drain into the skimmer section from a 1" bulkhead....I know the glass on the 5 gallon tank is weak but do you think drilling the tank will make it weaker......I also have in mind maybe using a rubber maid container .....I'm justs not sure about the plastic ..........do you get what Im trying to make.? any suggestions

This might give you an idea of what Im trying to make...this is with the rubbermaid tub....I have the skimmer removed here.....you think the rubbermaid tub would be ok to use....dont know if its food grade

IIRC, all of the standard rubbermaid "tubs" are food grade. Just because any oil they'd use on the non-food safe trash cans could be an irritant to skin and/or damage some delicate items you were to put in there. Plus it's a lot easier to unstick the bins then a big ole trash can.

If not, apparently just a good strong wash is even to clean them. Had my rubbermaid bins under my 125 for a couple months now.

As to what you want to do, move the intake hose to the rubbermaid so you can run a filter sock? And the skimmer would go in there, leaving the glass tank as just a refugium?

Yes Im going to move the drain to the tub I was just trying to give an idea of what I was trying to do......I dont have no room when I add the skimmer and didnt plan ahead when I added the sump that down the road I would add filter socks.....so you think the tub would be ok. Here is an update photo with the skimmer.....I need to get a 45 to add to my drain so it will flow to the tub

Food grade, Rubber Maid doesn't really mean squat.

ALL plastics should be cured prior to use in a saltwater system.
Curing is done with soaking in bleach water, saltwater, fresh water and finally airation.

That being said, the worst that will probably happen for not doing so is that the plastics will leach (generally phosphates) and you'll end up with an algae outbreak for awhile.
