Drilled my 1st tank

Well, as it says... I drilled my first tank. I drilled a 10 gal with my dremmel and it worked great. I had heard that the glass was very thin and 10's were had to drill, but I figured why not, if it cracks I can just shoot into Petco and grab another for $10. I went really slow, maybe slower than I needed to as it took about 45 min to an hour to do, but as I said it turned out great.

I kept the bit wet by taping half a plastic cup to the tank and adding about 1/4" of water (as seen in several DIY threads). I made my own bulkhead with 1" grey electrical conduit (threads aren't tapered) and a sink gasket. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I drilled it more or less for practice, but it worked so well I think I'm going to use it as a small refugium. A 55 gal. will be my next attempt. Wish me luck.

congrats!....we did one yesterday at one the members house...it came out good.there are pics posted on the CDMAS forum...after seeing it done..I am going to try it on my 55 later this year....what bit did you use on your dremel?....the one yesterday was drilled using a diamond bit hole saw...

Used the diamond bit set $5.49 at WallMart for the 2 piece set. I used the small ball tip bit to drill through the glass and then the longer tapered bit to bore it out in a circular path. Slowgoing but worked out real well in the long run. Although I must admit I am going to shop to a hole saw, and save myself about 45 min.

the hole saw that Steve used was something like 10 bucks including shipping....I can get you the vendor name if you want.....Dave

Well here are some pics, sorry about the quality, I took them quickly:

i like it i want to make something like that with my 10 gall but i think im going to drill the bottom and do a foam backdround to hide the pipes

Are the bottoms tempered on 10 gal tanks? Drilling would be next to impossible if so, just and fyi...

Cool thanks, I am definatley going to pick up a hole saw. It will save me a ton of time and a sore hand. :D
