drilling a Skimmer cup for a drain?

I have a unique situation in my house where I could make a "drain" for the collection cup on my Coralife Super SKimmer 65 by simply drilling a hole near the bottom of the collection cup, installing a gasket and running 1/4" tubing from the cup down through a whole that is already in the hardwood floor to a bucket or floor drain in the basement (not a finished basement). just so I dont have to dump every three days. should I go for it? I am sort of affraid to drill the whole in the cup though. has anyone done this?

(this skimmer is hanging on a 10gallon sump and refugium for my 25gallon display reef tank)

If you have access to a drill press use it. That will allow you to control the pressure you apply very well and should keep it from catching and possibly breaking. For support you are going to need a V block setup. Put the round cup in the V and drill the hole very slowly. Add your fitting, i would suggest a JACO bulkhead type fitting for RO line. I have never done it, but that is how i would do it.

Cleaning the skimmer cup neck, adds to the efficiency of the skimmer. They make special drill bits for drilling acrylic & plastic.
