Hi Roger,
Im having problems with the driver units on my stream pumps. One stopped working 6 months ago so i replaced it. Now another has stopped working (the pump stops and the transformer gets very hot) I have tried swapping pumps around and transformers and it is definitely the driver thats broken again.. Its starting to get very expensive. Have you any ideas what the problem could be?
Thanks John..

Two possibilities. In the US the few cases I have seen had the following causes- a power surge or the drive unit of the pump seized up and was left unattended for a prolonged period of time.

In addition to this I would suppose it is possible if a non Tunze controller was used.

I have to add that Britain is a particular anomaly in that unlike mainland Europe you use 240V rather than 230V- I have to wonder if it is a transformer issue. I cannot definitively say because I have no idea what a British Electronic pump includes, I have seen that the standard Turbelles have the standard British plug with a built in fuse, if it is the same transformer causing this again I would suspect a transformer problem.

Another thing to check is the prop, if at one point you changed the prop and were to accidentally use the 45mm 50Hz 6080 prop it could overdraw the driver and cause the same problem.

Thanks for the reply Roger. The pump had been seized up for a while i think ( i was at work) It then took 3 days of soaking the pump in vinigar to turn the propeller. Can the driver be repaired?
If so i will try giving Paraquatics in the Uk a ring.

P.S The Uk equipment is the same as the European equipment they supply a Uk adaptor plug that the European plug fits into.

Thanks John...

For long enough to cause this damage it would have to have been plugged in in a seized condition for at least 48hrs. Usually the damage you describe is a bad transistor- it will be cracked and burned. I have been able to successfully replace the components but it isn't easy and often other components are damaged too. I have only had 6 encounters with this 4 pumps belonged to one customer who had a massive power surge in a construction misshap, 1 pump had a cut cord and the short likely caused the damage and the other pump belonged to Frisco- a mod here and he had the long term seized type damage and I was able to take components from another board and make a working board in this case. One other problem I had was a hard whack can brake the coil thingamajig free, I think it is a choke of some sort but it is easy enough to solder back in place.

Thanks again Roger, I will give Paraquatics a ring tommorow and see if i can get it repaired ( if not buy a new one)
