Dry Rock Vs. Dead Coral

Hi All-I've done a lot more freshwater fishkeeping than marine fishkeeping. I'm really fond of shelf rock with stems attached to it. Just happen to like the look. Well, someone asked me if I wanted their piece of table coral. We were discussing how much I like the shelf/pedestal rock with natural stems and they noted the very similar look of table coral to Reef Saver Pedestal Rock with Natural Top. They asked if I could keep dead coral in the aquarium and I gingerly said "yes". Back in the 80's when I was a teenager I had my first marine aquarium with pieces of dead coral. This was before the days of "live rock". I've always been of the opinion that "rock" (live or dry) is better than dead coral due to it's generally more porous makeup/surface area. However, I felt shaky explaining why natural pedestal rock would be so much better than a piece of table coral. May I please get some feedback here? Thanks and stay safe!
