OK I am new to this hobby.. I have a question.. what is better a wet/dry sump or a refugium sump?? I have some LFS stores and they say come here to find my answers. SO which one is better?? I have a 75 gal tank which I want to do is fish and a couple pices live rock so that the Hermite crabs and shrimp to hid and eat.. I would like to out about 5 to 7 fish in the tank.. is that too many for that tank?? I have searched thru the the post and have not found any thing to help me out.. thanks for the help..

5-7 fish in a 75g sounds just fine, provided they're not big fish (avoid tangs, rabbitfish, etc.)

I'd recommend going with a sump/refugium combo, not a wet/dry filter. Whether you go fish only (FO), fish only with live rock (FOWLR), or reef, a sump/fuge will keep water conditions pristine and allow you to hide equipment. A wet/dry will work just fine for a FO tank, but if you decided to upgrade to a reef it could make things more difficult (the biological media can result in high nitrates, which coral won't tolerate).

BTW, [welcome]

I prefer refugiums myself as they filter out nutrients, help tp prevent algae, and provide a constant food source for the tank.

thanks for the help in which one to pick. I am going with refug. How big of a sump then for a 75 gal. Tank?

a 20 gallon long would work but something like a 40 Breeder would give you more room for skimmer and a bigger fuge. and as we all know, the bigger the better.

I use a 30g with my 54g tank, and have plenty of room for a fuge in it.
Nice thing about fuges, they produce fish food: copepods for dragonet species, like mandarins and scooters and wrasses; macroalgae for zebrasoma tangs, etc. Not to mention they increase oxygenation of the water and remove harmful phosphates and nitrates, using them to fertilize the algaes, PLUs keep those nuisance algaes from growing in your display tank.

You can't get ANY of those benefits from a wet/dry.
