Drywall mud

How many coats of this stuff needs to go on? I have 3 coats in the dining room and only one in the bedroom. I was planning on 3 but the dining room looks like it may need another 2 coats. I also noticed that it takes about 8 hours for this stuff to dry. I bought the green bucket. Should I have bought the blue bucket?

It takes an artistic touch to get this stuff how you want it. I have none of that!!! lol

Usually three is needed. Dry time depends upon humidity in the house. The current weather and your tank is not helping you out right now.

i have always bought the blue bucket, and I agree with becker on the humidity not helping you right now. I also agree with it being a pain in the butt to get it looking the way you want it.

I put the last coat on last night and got done around 1AM. I got up this morning at 6 am to put on another coat and the stuff was not dry yet. I also have the heat on to help but it's not helping much. I guess it will have to be a coat today and one in the morning then paint in the afternon...

What size knife are you using? You last coat should be very thin - just filing in little gaps and feathering out to nothing. It should dry in an hour or two (since you're putting it on so thin).

You should be using a big knife for your last 2 coats. Apply pressure to the outside of the blade so that you're blending into the existing wall.

I went form a 8" to a 14" for the 3rd one in the dining room. The main problem is that the new and the old drywall are level with eacother so I had to pull the mud from about 12" on each side to make it less visible...

what are the differences between Blue bucket vs green bucket? I am planning a drywalling project soon...

The green stuff is all purpose - base, second and 3rd coats. The light blue is the same but it's "lightweight" - less shrinking, cracking, sagging, etc. It probably has less water in it so it may dry a little faster.

Blue is typically used for finishing coats as well.

A good drywaller can do it in 2 coats with almost no sanding but it usally takes me three to get it done the way I like it

thins coats a few hours, first coat 15-20 typically unless you have good mud,

Also BK if you going to texture it (i think the rest of your ceiling was) then your not going to be able to see your lines anyway, and if you dont texture it then you'll see it no matter how good of a job you do :D

That was 30 years of paint. No texture. There must be abot 1/8' of paint on the ceiling!!!

What are the stats on the tank?

hey bk they sell quick set at homed depot that you can buy it sets up on 20, 45, or 90 minutes its a lttle bag made by sheetrock on the drywall aile just like levlon said only thing is that you have to mix the powder with some water
it usually only takes 2 coats and if you dont want to sand then you can solve that with another supper thin coat also if you stick a fan in that room an open a window it will dry a lot faster the green mud all purpose is only used to put the tape on and you do the coating with lightweight blue kind
how far are you from st charles???

Bed tape in with green. Then apply 2 coats blue mud over the top. If your good you can use hot mud but it is prone to cracking.

its started to come down in the tank a little bit, but I think it will be more of a difference tonight when I check it I'll have to get you more info then.

the PH is still dropping a little and I haven't set up any type of kalwrasser drip yet, i was hoping it would stabilize since my buffer is good.

but I am going to call you here in a bit, are you busy sunday for like a half an hour?

Sorry i missed your call Lucas. I passed out when i got home and woke up just minutes ago...

I should have some time on Sunday as soon as I detox from Saturday evening...
