DSB moving

I got a ? about DSB's. I have about 4" DSB with everything from Argonite fine sand to garf grunge. If/when I move this thing, 20g tank, do I need to worry about disturbing it? Or if I start a nano and want to take a few pounds out to seed it, again would it disturb the balance? Is there any parameters I should watch?

You're probably going to get alot of good and bad responses to this question.... and I hope this does not turn into a DSB/SSB/BB argument:)

Everything that I've read about DSB's suggests that you should "not" disturb them if at all poss. if the tank has been running for a long period of time.... Aside from that? I'm clueless:)

When I moved my sister's 20 gallon tank we moved it with the sand bed in it. We were able to pickup the stand with the tank in it and had no problems at all.

If that is not possible then I would remove the sand in layers and put it into buckets. When I have to remove the substrate during a move, I split the sand bed into 1" layers. Each layer goes into one or more buckets marked with the layer. When I reconstruct the sand bed I put the layers back in the reverse order. This method has worked very well for me in the past.

I picked up my new 150 gallon tank on Monday and will be setting it up and transferring the sand bed/plenum the way I described above.

Thanks,

Scott

If you mix it up, throw it away. everything bad settles to the bottom of a DSB. If you mix it = algea bloom.

If you re-use the sand placing it in buckets will disturb the de-nitrifiying bacteria. When placed back into the tank, I suspect it will take some time for the nitrates to drop.

Top few cm are "viable", anyway. I would discard the rest, but the top two cm, with which I would seed the new tank.

i would try to move the tank keepigntheb ed intact, it wont releasethe toxins stored deep inside, or you could scop off the top inch of ro and re seed wiht it
