I am starting a new 180g reef and going to use a deep sand bed. What kind of sand do I use. I need about 300lbs for a 4 inch bed

What kind of corals are you going to be keeping? How much flow do you plan on having? This is important to know, because if your going to be adding a lot of flow, for like SPS, you don't want to thin. I'd probably get a few bags of live sand to help with the cycle also. Not much help, but it's a start.

amount is correct for a 180 @ 4" DSB. i recommend arag-alive, it has millions of bacteria to help in cycle and to keep parameters stable. the smaller grains of 1-1.5 mm will give you more surface feet per square inch for them to live. bacteria is what eats/survives on the nitrite, ammonia, and nitrate. arag-alive is the choice of most for live sand. around $15.00 per 20lb bag. REEF-ON!!!

You can use play sand and then just add a scoop of sand from an established tank. There are many, many threads on what types of sand to use.

home depot in my area sells white play sand. it says kolorscape and is bagged by old castle. 40lbs for $3.99. i think its the smart choice.
