I know there are advocates on both sides. I can only offer anecdotal evidence. I have a 220 reef with a four inch deep sand bed which has been running for 10 years without a problem. I can send you pics if you wish. I have read horror stories of huge problems in far shorter times. My bed is populated with lots of worms, and god knows what else. I don't touch it but something runs thru it because I see evidence of that against the glass all the time. If I ever tear this thing down it is going to be a trip. I once moved a huge montipora only to find a 6 inch sea cumber clinging to the underside. I have seen that cucumber only that one time in 10 years. I have 200 lbs of live rock so there is lots of places to hide.
