Dsb

Do DSB's have to be replaced, cleaned, etc? What maintenance should be done with them? I'm thinking about putting one in my fuge.

Very touchy subject... you'd get answers from both sides.
They say DSB's have to be replaced after years of use... I THINK I remember reading that after about 5yrs they start to put bad things into the water.

With a DSB in a fuge... that makes it very easy to replace if you have to.

As for maintenance.... nothing much... clean the surface for junk... get "fuge pack" of critters or a "clean up crew" for it and you'll be set.

DSB in the DT, faith. DSB in the refuge, no faith. Already looking for the easy way out...

JMO.

I think the best bet is a remote DSB. The DSB would likely need to be changed out every couple of years. The function of the DSB is to assist in processing nitrates. So I would suspect that you would know when it would need to be replaced by testing your water parameters, which you should be doing already. As the nitrates gradually began to rise then you would know that your DSB was on the decline.

I know there are advocates on both sides. I can only offer anecdotal evidence. I have a 220 reef with a four inch deep sand bed which has been running for 10 years without a problem. I can send you pics if you wish. I have read horror stories of huge problems in far shorter times. My bed is populated with lots of worms, and god knows what else. I don't touch it but something runs thru it because I see evidence of that against the glass all the time. If I ever tear this thing down it is going to be a trip. I once moved a huge montipora only to find a 6 inch sea cumber clinging to the underside. I have seen that cucumber only that one time in 10 years. I have 200 lbs of live rock so there is lots of places to hide.

Mine will be 9 years old come spring. Still going strong.

I run a 4-6 inch deep sand bed in both of my tanks and have never had a problem although it has only been 3 years but still doing fine. Lots of critter live there for sure.
