dual bio wheel filter for qt?

I've been trying to accumulate the necessary items for a qt tank before I start considering adding more fish to my dt.

Picked up a used marineland dual bio wheel filter today, just wondering if it would be optimal for use on a qt, after cleaning and replacing the bio wheels and filter pad, and would I have to change the bio wheels every time I start a new qt?

Thanks.

I would think it would work OK on a QT tank. Whether or not you change them every time you start would probably depend on what happened the last time they were used. I would be concerned if you did any medicating in QT that there would be residuals caught up in the biowheels. You'll have to keep them clean, they can be subject to salt creep which will stop them from spinning.

If you're planning on breaking the tank down in between QT sessions, you could always keep a fresh bio-wheel in your DT sump for a few weeks before you set up the QT tank and you should have a nearly instant cycle. Just don't put the QT biowheels back in the DT or you defeat the whole purpose of QT-ing.

I would recommend getting a used aqua clear or a new one as everytime you medicate or have an ich or and disease outbreak in there you don't need to replace the bio wheels.

I have a similar question.

I'm ready to add more fish to my display tank and I had a bio wheel filter for when I was QTing my first two fish.

I guess I could just toss a filter floss in one of my compartments of my AIO and have it get some beneficial bacteria and toss it in the QT when I buy a new fish. Alternatively, I was wondering if I could just buy a new bio wheel and toss that when I'm done observing ...

Would either be fine ? It is a 10g tank that would have a small power head , the bio wheel filter, heater , and some pvc pipes. Obviously use the ammonia ring and change water weekly until the QT session is over

Or just don't use the bio-wheels on the ones you have.....

I don't know why I didn't think of this. I've never used a hob filter before, for some reason I was thinking the bio wheels were necessary for operation.

I'll just buy a 6 pack of the filter pads and uses those for the qt. Thanks for the tip.

I do plan on breaking down the qt when not needed, so I guess it will work fine without them.
